Controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik Friday slapped a Rs 500 crore defamation suit against Times Nows editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami for allegedly running a “hate campaign” and “media trial” against him.
Naik, who is currently in Saudi Arabia, sent the notice through his lawyer in Mumbai, accusing Goswami of hurting “religious sentiments” and “promoting disharmony and feelings of hatred, enmity and ill-will between different religious groups”.
The Mumbai-based televangelist is currently under government scanner after the Dhaka terror attack that left 22 dead. One of the attackers was allegedly influenced by Naik’s sermons on Islam. The Bangladesh government subsequently banned Naik’s Peace TV from broadcasting in the country. His recent comments about suicide bombings also reflected badly on the former doctor-turned-preacher. After the terror attack in Nice, Naik, speaking via Skype, told reporters that it was wrong to kill innocent people, but it is allowed in Islam as a war tactic. Naik also agreed to cooperate with Indian authorities, if approached.
