In general, trade is lawful and permissible in Islam, for it is an exchange of products between the buyer and seller. But when harm may be incurred to either of the two parties, the trade is deemed unlawful and prohibited. Allah (swt) says: (O you who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves unjustly.) [4:29] Islam has deemed the profits made from trade of the purest and best means of earning a living. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) was asked about which earning was best and most pure, and he replied: “Work done by a person using his own hands [i.e. manual labor] and every truthful and sincere trade.” [Ahmad] Islam has enjoined that the individual be truthful while conducting business. The Prophet) said “A Muslim merchant who is truthful and trustworthy will be with the martyrs on the Day of Requital.” [al-Haakim] One should explain any faults which may not be apparent in the product. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: “It is impermissible for anyone to sell anything except if he clarifies any fault that may be found in it, and anyone who knows of it should (also) clarify it.” [Ahmad] One should not cheat. Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) passed by a pile of food. He put his hands inside it and felt water on his fingers. He said: “What is this, o seller of (this) food?” He said: 'It was left out in the rain, O Messenger of Allah!” He said, “Could you not have put it on top of the food so that people could see it? Whoever deceives (people) is not from us.” [Muslim] A person should be truthful in his dealings and not lie. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: “The two parties (involved in the trade) have an option (to cancel the trade) as long as they have not parted. If they have both told the truth and clarified all aspects, their trade will be blessed for them. But if they conceal (faults and other aspects) and lie, the blessings of the trade will be wiped out.” [al-Bukhari and Muslim] One should be easy going while buying and selling, for it is a means to form and strengthen relations between the buyer and seller and does away with the causes of materialism which destroy human and brotherly relationships. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: “May Allah have mercy on a person who is easygoing when he buys, sells, or asks the repayment of a loan.” [al-Bukhari] One should not swear oaths when he trades. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: “Be careful and stay away from swearing many oaths when trading, for [if he does so falsely] the buyer will buy, but then its blessing will be wiped-out.” [Muslim] It encourages that one take back the sale if a person is regretful of the purchase. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: “Whoever takes back the sale of his brother, Allah will take back [the punishment] of his slips on the Day of Resurrection.” [Abu Dagwood & bin Rajah] These are some of the manners and etiquettes which Islam has prescribed. There are many others, but due to brevity, we cannot mention them here. It is sufficient to know that there is no matter in life, except that there is a Qur'anic verse, or Prophetic tradition which addresses it. The reason for this is that a Muslim's entire life would become an act of worship, and a means to increase his good deeds.</div>

Is Your Home an Islamic Home?

Allāh says: “And Allāh has made for you in your homes a place of rest…” [1]<br />
This may seem like an unusual question and your automatic response may be “Why, of course my home is an Islāmic Home!! My family is Muslim and that makes our home a Muslim one!!” Go through this short checklist to determine if your response should really be in the affirmative.<br />
I Have Chosen a Good Spouse<br />
There are several aḥadīth that highlight the importance of choosing a righteous and pious spouse. The wisdom of this is obvious: a pious spouse is more likely to bring happiness and contentment to the other spouse and the couple together will be more able to build a righteous family and home life. This is the foundation of the home.<br />
I Help Guide My Spouse<br />
This begins with each spouse fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of their roles and treating each other with kindness and compassion. It then goes beyond this to include guidance in other spiritual matters such as striving to strengthen imān; paying attention to worship and correcting it when needed; encouraging the reading of Qur’ān, praying at night, giving charity, and reading books on Islām; helping to choose pious friends; enjoining goodness and forbidding evil. Imān is something that may increase or decrease so it is necessary to continually focus on increasing our own and that of our spouse.<br />
Our Home is a Place for Remembrance of Allāh<br />
Remembrance can be in many forms: with the heart, with the tongue, through prayer, recitation of Qur’ān, memorizing adhkār and using them, discussing Islamic issues, or reading Islamic material. These are things that should occur on a consistent basis so that the angels will come to the home and bring Allāh’s blessings. The Prophet, (Ṣallāhu ‘alayhi wa salam) said: ” The example of a home in which Allāh is remembered and the example of a home in which Allāh is not remembered, is like comparing the living and the dead.”[2]<br />
Our Home is a Place of Worship<br />
This means that ṣalah is established within the home at its required time and that members of the family pray in congregation when several are present. The family may also designate a specific area for prayer and maintain its uniqueness and cleanliness. For women, it is better to pray each prayer within the home. For men, it is recommended to pray voluntary prayers at home after having prayed obligatory prayers in the masjid. The Prophet (Ṣallāhu ‘alayhi wa salam) said: “The voluntary prayer in the home is better than the voluntary prayer with the people. It is like the obligatory prayer of the man in congregation being better than praying the obligatory by himself.” [3] This is to ensure that homes are made places of worship just as the masajids.<br />
We Regularly read Surah Al-Baqarah and Ayatul Kursi to Keep Satan Away<br />
The Messenger of Allāh (Ṣallāhu ‘alayhi wa salam) said: “Recite Surah Al Baqarah in your houses, for the satan does not enter a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.” [4] He also said: “When you go to your bed, recite Ayatul Kursi: ‘Allāh! There is no god but Him, the Ever Living, the One Who Sustains and Protects all that exists’ to the end, for then there will remain over you a guardian from Allāh, and satan will not come near you until morning.” [5]<br />
Teaching and Learning are Ongoing Activities in Our Home<br />
This is primarily the responsibility of the head of the household who must ensure that he is guiding his family to the correct path, enjoining them to do good, and forbidding them from evil. Attaining knowledge is incumbent upon all members of the family and is the basis upon which imān will flourish. A study circle should be established in the home that covers the various areas in Islām and from which all family members will benefit. Children should especially be encouraged to participate since this will establish a pattern for them that will be carried throughout their lifetimes.<br />
We Have an Islamic Library in Our Home<br />
This may include such things as books, cassette tapes, and CDs. It is important to choose accurate and reliable material that will benefit the members of the family. There should be a variety of materials to cover all age levels and language needs of those in the home. Arabic material is definitely a must since everyone in the family should either know or be learning to read the language of the Qur’ān. Books should cover a variety of topics, be properly organized, and be easily accessible. Audiotapes and CDs may include Qur’ān recitation, lectures, khuṭbahs, tapes for children containing supplications, reminders of Islamic manners, and nashīds (religious songs with no musical instruments). Family members should encourage one another to use these materials on a regular basis, and should be shared with other Muslim families who may be in need of them.<br />
We Try to Have Morals and Manners Like Prophet Muḥammad<br />
The Prophet (Ṣallāhu ‘alayhi wa salam) said: “When Allāh wills some good towards the people of a house hold, He introduces kindness among them.”[6] He also said: “Allāh loves kindness and rewards it in such a way the He does not reward for harshness or for anything else.”[7] There are many examples of the Prophet’s kindness and good treatment toward his family that we should try to emulate. He was affectionate and playful with his wives and children and would help with household chores to ease the burden for his wives. Following his example will bring tranquillity to the home and help to truly make it an abode of rest.<br />
We Know the Islamic Rulings That Pertain to Houses<br />
Such as guarding the secrets of the home, seeking permission to enter, not looking into other people’s homes, not allowing children to enter the parent’s bedroom during certain times of the day, and not staying alone overnight. This last one is interesting to consider since some husbands travel for their business or work. The Prophet (Ṣallāhu ‘alayhi wa salam) actually discouraged this. Ibn ‘Umar reported that the Prophet forbade being alone and said that a man should not stay overnight alone or travel alone.[8] Not only will he be alone, but his wife and children are likely to be left alone in the home without any protection or companionship.<br />
We Invite Righteous and Knowledgeable People to Our Home<br />
“My Lord! Forgive me, and my parents, and him who enters my home as a believer, and all the believing men and women.” [9] Righteous people who enter your home will bring many benefits due to their presence and conversations with them. They are more likely to discuss useful topics and may be excellent sources of information and knowledge. We should always make du’ā that Allāh will bless us with righteous friends since they can have such positive effects on us. The Prophet (Ṣallāhu ‘alayhi wa salam) said: “Keep company with a believer only, and let your food be eaten only by the righteous.”[10]<br />
There are No Evils Within Our Home<br />
Television (except possibly for educational programs) and unlawful music are not allowed in the house; pictures on the wall do not contain animate beings; there are no statues or anything that resembles statues; dogs are not present in the house; smoking is not allowed; decorations are kept simple to avoid excessiveness; the telephone is used for beneficial purposes and not harmful ones (such as gossiping or backbiting); when people come to visit, the men and women sit separately. The effects of these evils on the sanctity of the home should be obvious. For example, the Prophet (Ṣallāhu ‘alayhi wa salam) said: “Angels do not enter a house which has either a dog or a picture in it.”[11]<br />
The Physical Aspects of the Home are Conducive to Fulfilling Religious Obligations<br />
It is best for the home to be close to a mosque so that it will be easier for men to attend the prayers in congregation and for all family members to visit the mosque for lectures, study groups, and social gatherings. It is also advisable to find an area where other Muslims live to obtain the benefits of community. One should definitely be careful about close neighbours and avoid those who are obviously immoral. When choosing a house, consideration should be made regarding the availability of separate sitting areas for men and women. The house should be spacious and fulfil safety and health requirements.<br />

The Prophet's Attributes and Manners

The Prophet <em>sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam</em> combined both perfection of creation and perfection of manners.<br />

Men's dignity, devotion and estimation of the Messenger of Allah <em>sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam</em>
 were unique and matchless. No other man in the whole world has been so 
honoured and beloved. Those who knew him well, were fascinated and 
enchanted by him. They were ready to sacrifice their lives for the sake 
of saving a nail of his, from hurt or injury.<br />

<h3>
Beauty of Creation</h3>
Describing the Messenger of Allah <em>sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam</em> who passed by her tent on his journey of migration, 'Umm Ma'bad al-Khuza'iyah <em>radiallahu 'anha</em> said to her husband:<br />

<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="salaf">"He was innocently 
bright and had broad countenance. His manners were fine. Neither was his
 belly bulging out nor was his head deprived of hair. He had black 
attractive eyes finely arched by continuous eyebrows. His hair glossy 
and black, inclined to curl, he wore long. His voice was extremely 
commanding. His head was large, well formed and set on a slender neck. 
His expression was pensive and contemplative, serene and sublime.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="salaf">The stranger was 
fascinated from the distance, but no sooner he became intimate with him,
 than this fascination was changed into attachment and respect.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="salaf">His expression was very
 sweet and distinct. His speech was well set and free from the use of 
superfluous words, as if it were rosary of beads.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="salaf">His stature was neither too high nor too small to look repulsive. He was a twig amongst the two, singularly bright and fresh.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="salaf">He was always 
surrounded by his Companions. Whenever he uttered something, the 
listeners would hear him with rapt attention and whenever he issued a 
commandment, they vied with each other in carrying it out. He was a 
master and a commander.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="salaf">His utterances were marked by truth and sincerity, free from all kinds of falsehoods and lies."</span></div>
'Ali ibn Abi Talib <em>radiallahu 'anhu</em> describing him <em>sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam</em> said:<br />

<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="salaf">"The Messenger of Allah <em>sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam</em>
 was neither excessively tall nor extremely short. He was medium height 
among his friends. His hair was neither curly nor wavy. It was in 
between. His face was not swollen or meaty-compact. It was fairly round.
 His mouth was white. He had black and large eyes with long haired 
eyelids. His joints (limbs) and shoulder joints were rather big. He had 
rod-like little hair extending from his chest down to his navel, but the
 rest of his body was almost hairless. He had thick hand palms and thick
 fingers and toes.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="salaf">At walking, he lifted his feet off the ground as if he had been walking in a muddy remainder of water.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="salaf">When he turned, he 
turned all. The Prophethood Seal was between his shoulders. He is the 
Seal of Prophets, the most generous and the bravest of all."</span></div>
Abu Hurayrah <em>radiallahu 'anhu</em> said :<br />

<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="salaf">"I have never seen a thing nicer than the Messenger of Allah <em>sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam</em>.
 It seems as if the sunlight were moving within his face. I have never 
seen one who is faster in pace than the Messenger of Allah <em>sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam</em>.
 It seems as if the earth had folded up to shorten the distance for him.
 For we use to wear ourselves out while he was at full ease."</span></div>
Whenever Abu Bakr <em>radiallahu 'anhu</em> saw him he would say :<br />

<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="salaf">"He is faithful, chosen
 (by Allah), and calls for forgiveness. He shines like a full moon light
 when it is far from dark (clouds)."</span></div>
Umar <em>radiallahu 'anhu</em> said :<br />

<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="salaf">"When he got angry his 
face would go so red that you think it were an inflected red skin-spot 
with pomegranate grains on both cheeks."</span></div>
Ibn 'Abbas <em>radiallahu 'anhu</em> said :<br />

<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="salaf">"His two front teeth 
were split, so whenever he speaks, light goes through them. His neck was
 as pure and silvery as a neck of doll. His eyelids were long haired, 
but his beard was thick. His nose was high-tipped, middle- cambered with
 narrow nostrils. His legs were plain, straight and stretching down. His
 other limbs were straight too. The two hollows of his soles hardly 
touch the ground. When he walks away he vanishes soon; but he walks at 
ease. The way he walks seems similar to one who is leaning forwards and 
is about to fall down."</span></div>
'Anas <em>radiallahu 'anhu</em> said :<br />

<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="salaf">"I have never touched silk, or a silky garment softer than the palm of the Prophet s<em>allallahu 'alayhi wa sallam</em>; nor have I smelt a perfume or any scent nicer than his. His sweat was pearl-like."</span></div>
The heart of every Muslim is filled with the love of the Last Prophet Muhammad <em>sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam</em>
 and this love of the Messenger of Allah is an asset to him. Love and 
respect of a person depends on the benefits, we get from him. As the 
Prophet <em>sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam</em> is the greatest benefactor
 of humanity, every Muslim has deepest love for him. Every deed of his 
life is to be followed by every individual of Muslim <em>'Ummah</em>. Highest love for the Prophet <em>sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam</em> is made a test of our faith.<br />

Allah (<em>subhanahu wa ta'ala</em>) has described and explained the status of Muhammad <em>sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam</em> in the <em>Qur'an</em>:<br />

<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="quran">"Say (O Muhammad to mankind): If you really love Allah then follow me (i.e. accept Islam and follow the <em>Qur'an</em> and the <em>Sunnah</em>), and Allah will love you ... "</span> [<em>Al-Qur'an</em> 3:31]</div>
From the <em>hadith</em> of the Prophet <em>sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam</em>, he said:<br />

<div style="margin-left: 2em;">
<span class="hadith">"None of you has faith unless I am dearer to him than his father, his son and all mankind."</span></div>
His speech was the most reliable. He was the keenest and the most 
attentive to people's trust and was very careful to pay people's due in 
full.<br />

The Prophet <em>sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam</em> was the most 
tractable and the most yielding companion, seeing him unexpectedly, you 
fear him and venerate him. He who has acquaintance with him will like 
him. He who describes him says:<br />

"I have never seen such a person before, nor after seeing him."</div>
